Welcome to the first international conference on Lifelong learning for Competitiveness, Employability and Social Inclusion. This conference aims to address the issue of using learning as a tool to increase the competitiveness of organisations worldwide and improve the employability of our citizens.

In today’s difficult economic times achieving and maintaining competitiveness is key. Management literature suggests that competitive advantage built on knowledge and skills is less visible to competitors and thus more difficult to imitate, therefore providing a base for a more robust advantage. Thus the focus of the conference is learning for competitiveness in order to build and sustain a more robust economy.

Themes
– University industry interface in learning
– Applied learning
– Models of incorporating work practices into third level education
– E-learning/mlearning.
– work based learning
– Models for encouraging companies to adopt learning as a competitive tool.
– Social inclusion in learning for competitiveness
– Informal learning
– Learning in networks and CoPs

Call For Papers: International Workshop on Social Service Computing (SSC 2011)Call For Papers: International Workshop on Social Service Computing (SSC 2011)

Nowadays, a good number of applications exhibit social elements reported in people’s daily life. The objective of these applications is to link users together to facilitate interactions and make them richer and more productive. Social computing introduces a new dimension to the Web that goes beyond connecting HTML pages. Indeed, social applications based on weblogs, social networks, wikis, etc. have reinforced the role of the Web as an inevitable communication means. Among all these applications social networks are those that have attracted the attention of academia and industry communities. For instance, a social network platform like Facebook is being seen as a serious rival to some well established players in the Web business such as Google. This major shift in developing Web applications permits to accommodate users’ needs and requirements better, but raises major challenges in an environment that has become increasingly complex, less structured, and more hostile considering the great mass of knowledge generally hidden from users.
Despite the growing interest in integrating social computing with focus on social networks into Web applications, agility and competitiveness remain a challenge for modern enterprises to compete and respond quickly to market and business changes. Web applications are required to be interoperable. Web Services (WSs), which implement the Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) principles, seem recently to be the technology of choice to develop interoperable applications that can cross organization boundaries. There is a kind of synergy between social computing and service computing. Social computing reflects relationships that people daily experience like friendship and dislike on social networks. Service computing allows developing applications as per the basic principle of “I offer services that somebody else may need” and “I require services that somebody else may offer”. The format of the workshop in terms of number of sessions, types of papers (long or short), keynote speakers, and last but not least panel discussions will be set upon completing paper review and author notification. The workshop format will be designed to foster discussion and developing action outcomes on key issues relating to social computing research relating to service computing.

AIM

This workshop aims at gathering researchers from the fields of social computing and service computing to think about the obstacles that hurdle the leveraging of social sciences and techniques for application to services. We target researchers from both industry and academia to join forces in this new area. We intend to discuss the recent and significant developments in the general area of Social Web Services and to promote cross-fertilization of techniques. In particular, we hope to identify techniques from social computing that will have the greatest impact on making Web services take into account their previous experiences to build networks of contacts. Another aim of the workshop is to identify important directions for the social community to focus on that may be adopted by the wider service community.

TOPICS

Social networks analysis and mining for Web services discovery
Group interaction and collaboration for Web services composition
Social networks for Web services privacy and security
Business opportunities for Social Web services
Impact of social interactions on services infrastructures and QoS
Social relationship between Web services
Social behavior and Web service transaction
Evolution of Web services in social-like environments
Social Web services and robustness
Reputation and social Web services
Recommendation and social Web services
Social tagging application for Web services
User generated services (UGS), Mashups, and mobile Mashups
Metrics and evaluation
Case studies

AUDIENCE

This workshop will be of particular interest to service computing researchers who are working in e-Business (a primary application area of WS), those interested in developing open systems, in tracking and developing standards, and of general interest to anyone using the social and service paradigms for software development. We also believe that the Workshop’s topic area will be of significant interest to the wider IT community and expect industry participation.

Call For Papers: ACM Transactions on Intelligent Systems and Technology – Special Issue on Semantic Adaptive Social Web (TIST-SI-SASWeb 2012)Call For Papers: ACM Transactions on Intelligent Systems and Technology – Special Issue on Semantic Adaptive Social Web (TIST-SI-SASWeb 2012)

1. Overview

Social Web is growing daily, together with the number of users and applications. Users generate a significant part of Web content and traffic: they create, connect, comment, tag, rate, remix, upload/download, new or existing resources in an architecture of participation, where user contribution and interaction add value. Users are also involved in a broad range of social activities like creating friendship relationships, recommending and sharing resources, suggesting friends, creating groups and communities, commenting friends activities and profiles and so on.

At the same time, Semantic Web, whose main goal is to describe Web resources in a way that allows machines to understand and process them, has started to go out from academies and begins to be massively exploited in many web sites, incorporating high-quality user contributed content and semantic annotations using Internet-based services as an enabling platform.

The recent advances in the Semantic Web area, and specifically the widespread use of weak semantic techniques (the so-called ‘lowercase’ semantic web), such as the use of microformats (e.g. eRDF, RDFa) to attach semantics to content, also provide new standardized ways to process and share information. This approach allows information intended for end-users (such as contact informationgeographic coordinates, calendar events, …) to also be automatically processed by machines, and this obviates other more complicated methods of processing, such as natural language processing or screen scraping.

The primary goal of this special issue is to showcase cutting edge research on the intersection of Social Web and Semantic Web, in order to analyze the benefits adaptation and personalization have to offer in the Web of the future, the so-called Social Semantic Web.

We are particularly interested in system-oriented papers, in which the approaches are accompanied by an in-depth experimental evaluation.

2. Topics

Topics of interests include, but are not limited to:

  • The impact of Social Web on Semantic Web, and viceversa
  • Applications and tools using Social Semantic Web technologies
  • Emerging semantic platforms for the Social Semantic Web
  • Enriching Social Web with semantic data: weak semantic techniques, microformats and other approaches
  • Folksonomies vs Ontologies
  • Novel approaches and/or systems combining semantic, social and adaptive aspects
  • Adaptation, personalization, recommendation models and goals in the Social Semantic Web
  • Reasoning in the Social Semantic Web
  • Novel trust and reputation models
  • Social navigation support, social search and semantic browsing
  • Semantic Mashups
  • User studies and novel metrics for evaluating Social Semantic Web applications
  • Querying and mining Social Semantic Web data

3. Tentative Schedule

Full paper submission: September 30, 2011

Review decision notification: December, 22 2011

Final manuscript: February 6, 2012

4. Submissions guidelines

Manuscripts submitted to the special issue should contain original material not published in nor submitted to other journals. Each paper will be reviewed by at least three expert reviewers. Papers which do not meet publication quality standards, or does not pass the editorial assessment of suitability of this special issue will be rejected before the review process.

Full papers should be sent via on-line submission system at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/tist (please select “Special Issue: Semantic Adaptive Social Web” as the manuscript type). Details of the journal and manuscript preparation are available on the ACM TIST Website at http://tist.acm.org/
